Variations, prices, and sale windows
How variations carry SKU, stock, and price — plus base vs sale price, scheduled sales, and tax classes.
A product is a container; its variations are what customers actually buy. Each variation has its own SKU, stock, and price — so a t-shirt in three sizes is one product with three variations.
Base price and sale price
- Base price — the default selling price for the variation (required to sell it).
- Sale price — an optional lower price that applies only inside a sale window.
- Sale window — optional start and end dates; the sale price is active only between them.
Tax class
Each variation can carry a tax class. At checkout, tax resolves in this order: the variation's tax class, then the product's tax class, then your store's standard class, and finally zero if none apply. Set the right class so VAT is correct on every line.
Bulk price changes
To change many prices at once, use Manage your Store → Price Lists (the bulk price editor) rather than editing products one by one. See Importing your catalog for spreadsheet-based updates.
