Vendor vs Shopify — an honest comparison.
Where each platform is strong, where each is weak, and how to think about choosing. Written by an engineer who's worked on both.
Why we wrote this.
[Placeholder] We've migrated 25+ stores from Shopify Plus, and we've also walked away from deals where Shopify was clearly the better fit. This page exists so you can make that call honestly. We try not to mislead. Where Shopify is better, we say so.
Two different bets on commerce.
Vendor
One operational backbone, built deep.
[Placeholder] Vendor's bet: most operational complexity should be a native primitive, not an app. Catalog, checkout, payments, subscriptions, returns, B2B, omnichannel — all designed together. Fewer integrations, more depth per surface.
Shopify Plus
An ecosystem of apps around a fast core.
[Placeholder] Shopify's bet: a fast checkout core surrounded by a thriving app ecosystem. Pick and combine the apps you need. This is excellent at small-to-mid scale; the friction is real once you have 15+ apps to coordinate.

When to choose each.
Choose Vendor when…
- You're past €3M GMV and feeling app fatigue.
- You want native subscriptions, B2B, or omnichannel as primitives.
- Checkout customization is on your roadmap and you've hit Shopify's limits.
- You want to own your storefront stack (Next.js, TypeScript).
- You're migrating from a legacy platform and want a long-term home.
Choose Shopify when…
- You're under €2M GMV and want the fastest time-to-launch.
- Shop Pay is a meaningful conversion lever for your audience.
- You rely on a Shopify-specific app ecosystem (POS, fulfillment).
- Your team is most comfortable with Liquid / Shopify's admin.
- Your customizations are surface-level and Checkout Extensibility covers them.
Common comparison questions.
Is Vendor a fork of Shopify or similar?
[Placeholder] No. Vendor is built ground-up. We took inspiration from operators we've worked with — not from any single platform's architecture.
Can I run both during a migration?
[Placeholder] Yes. We support phased migrations — typically segment-by-segment, region-by-region, or B2B-then-DTC. Most customers run both for 4–8 weeks during cutover.
What about Shopify Plus's POS?
[Placeholder] We have a native POS (iPad + Android). If you have a deep dependency on Shopify POS hardware or workflows, that's a real consideration — Shopify POS is mature.
How honest is this comparison really?
[Placeholder] As honest as we know how to be. We benchmark against Shopify Plus features as of the most-recent release. If you spot something inaccurate, email comparison@vendor.com.mk — we'll fix it within a week.
